Richard Gere made headlines this month after delivering a scathing critique of former U.S. President Donald Trump during Spain’s prestigious Goya Awards ceremony, where he received a Lifetime Achievement Award. The 75-year-old actor, now residing in Spain with his wife Alejandra Silva and their two young sons Alexander (5) and James (3), called Trump a “bully and a thug” while addressing political tensions in America.
Gere emphasized the need for unity during his acceptance speech: “We’re in a very dark place in America… We have unfortunately elected officials that don’t inspire us in the way we want to be inspired”. His remarks come amid renewed attention to his decades-long activism for Tibetan independence and human rights causes, which previously led to his ban from China and Hollywood blockbuster roles.
The “Pretty Woman” star recently shifted focus to European projects, including BBC’s 2019 drama MotherFatherSon, while continuing humanitarian work through his Gere Foundation.
